Use of quiz in teaching and learning
Introduction
A quiz is a form of test of knowledge,
especially as competition between individuals or team as a form of
entertainment in which players attempt to answer questions correctly about
a certain or variety of subjects. Quizzes can be used as a brief
assessment in education and similar fields to measure growth in knowledge,
abilities, or skills. They can also be televised for entertainment purposes,
often in a game show format. With the
evolving technology, the traditional way of teaching student is really gone,
and teachers find new methods of teaching, and helping student ace examinations
having strong academic foundation. Today,
quizzes are an interactive platform for students where they participate to gain
knowledge, seek opportunities to excel beyond academics, and not to rewarded
with prizes. With practicing quizzes, students can do critical thinking, and
get into a habit of innovative learning.
In an educational context, a quiz is usually a
form of a student assessment, but often has fewer questions of less difficulty
and requires less time for completion than a test. Not only are quizzes
fun for students, they are also a sneaky form of learning as they don't feel
like a traditional activity. Quizzes can help your students practice existing
knowledge while stimulating interest in learning about new subject
matter. This use is typically found in the United
States, Canada, the Philippines, Dominican Republic and
some colleges in India. Some instructors schedule a daily or weekly quiz
ranging from five to thirty relatively easy questions for the purpose of having
the students review their previous lessons before attending the next class. A
"pop quiz" is a quiz that students are given no time to prepare for;
they are simply surprised with it in class.
Advantages
Collaboration in small
groups
Quizzes can be set up individually or in small
groups. In groups, students can brainstorm to help each other. Some of the
discussions they could have would never happen in an individual test.
Quizzes can help identify gaps in
knowledge
Once students have completed a topic, it is
better to conduct a quiz on what they have covered. It is a fun way to end a
lesson, while showing the teacher if there any gaps or areas they need to cover
again in more depth. Leaving the answers open-ended can produce some great
results.
Quizzes can help revision
To help students prepare for an upcoming exam
or test, why not prepare a quiz to highlight any gaps in learning? It will also
create a template of keywords and phrases for students to memorize. Ten
keywords or sentences is a lot easier to remember as a guide, and seems far
less daunting than having to revise the whole topic
